Opera Thrives in Shreveport

View All Arts & Music

Founded in 1949, Shreveport Opera is one of the oldest opera companies in the nation. With world-renowned performers and powerful community education, Shreveport Opera spreads awareness about one of the world’s greatest art forms.

The company has successfully hosted some of the world’s top performers, including Beverly Sills, Franco Corelli, Leontyne Price and Sherrill Milnes. It also played an integral role in launching the careers of international opera stars Renee Fleming and Greer Grimsley.

Shreveport Opera presents traditional operatic repertoire, but it also incorporates modern special events that reveal the allure of concert singing to new audiences. Every year, the company presents three main stage productions and hosts the dynamic Mary Jacobs Smith Singer of the Year Competition. In addition, the Shreveport Opera Xpress (SOX)—the only educational opera-touring program in Louisiana—brings opera appreciation to 50,000 children, youth and adults across the state annually.

From surprise “flash mob” performances to gala grand openings, Shreveport Opera actively participates with community foundations, schools, hospitals, homeless shelters and other area organizations to bring opera to people of all ages, walks of life and socioeconomic backgrounds.
